Team Q&A: 7 Questions with our Head of Digital Design, Kelsy

Style is everything and our Head of Digital Design, Kelsy, is all about keeping Coassemble looking FRESH and fun! With over a decade of experience, Kelsy ensures our brand is always smart, colorful, and really good looking. We sat down with Kelsy to find out what makes effective graphic design and how she accomplishes so much magic in her day.

1. Let’s start with an easy one - what is your role at Coassemble?

In short, I’m a digital designer. My main focus (and my baby) is the website. I design, code, and analyze the website so I’m heavily involved in all aspects of it and love it.

When I’m not working on the website, I make sure that our designs reflect our brand in social media, newsletters, ad campaigns, and animation.

I also work with the designers in the product team to make sure both marketing and product are giving the customers a similar brand experience from the website to the product.

2. What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy the versatility of my job. I’ll be designing a website one minute, then I’ll move to a big microlearning campaign the next. Although I don’t get much downtime, it’s pretty rewarding. I’m also evolving my skills in animation which has always been a big love of mine.

3. Your role as a digital designer is quite creative - where do you get inspiration from, and what tools do you use to create visual content?

I get a lot of inspiration from Muzli, which if you haven’t heard or seen it, is a chrome plugin made by Invision to aggregate the trending and best designs around the world. They take the best of the best of all the design inspiration sites like Awwwards, Siteinspire, Behance, Dribbble, CSS Awards, and so on.

It’s a part of my morning ritual. A cup of coffee and some Muzli :)

4. I understand you’re working on something exciting at the moment for Coassemble - could you tell me a little about that?

Yes, we are working on a brand refresh for Coassemble. I am very excited about this one.

Scott Kirkman, who created our original brand for Coassemble, made some tweaks to the branding and gave it another life.

We are also revamping our website with a brand new look and we have really focused on the performance aspect to give the user the best experience we can give them.

5. That sounds like a huge start to 2021! This isn’t the first time you’ve worked on refreshing the Coassemble brand and website - how do you feel the brand has developed over the years?

Yes, since working at Coassemble for 2.5 years, I have worked with three brand refreshes :) The brand has definitely matured over the years.

The first brand and website, was basically a start-up approach, design something nice and hope it sticks.

The second, we wanted to get some professionals to help us so we got Shorthand Studio to dive deep into our brand and from there we were able to really take our brand to the next level.

I feel with this third (and not final, ha!) brand refresh, we are confident as who we are as a brand, who we are delivering this brand to, and how the design represents us.

6. How would you describe working at Coassemble with a quote and/or GIF?

I couldn't pick just one!

7. If you could travel anywhere in the world (without any current travel restrictions), where would it be or why?

I live a good 25 hrs plane ride from where I grew up, which is the corn state—Iowa. I would travel to Iowa so that I could see my family.

I’m an American living in Australia so although I do love everything about Australia, I do miss seeing my family on a regular basis.
