Shopping for a training platform sucks

We researched the purchase process for training platforms in 2020. Spoiler: it’s not good. See our findings below (and our solution...)

The Current State Of Buying Training Platforms In 2020

Our team analyzed hundreds of training platforms and their purchase models. To say their buying process is broken would be an understatement. Confusing trials, not enough time to learn their features, and heavy upfront or unexpected costs throughout.

Identification of need

You have to become an industry expert, reading through a dizzying assortment of 1,000+ vendors’ feature checklists and trying to work out: A) what these terms mean and B) how they relate to your team... on top of this, you have to come to terms with a mismatch of pricing models. What’s better - $699/month for 125 active learners? $5,000/year for 400 users? $2 per learner? $399/month for 50GB storage and 200 users?

Evalutation of platform

As you enter the evaluation stage, you find yourself signed up to 4 different trial accounts, none of which have offered you any form of support. You have one limited freemium account that only lets you click on 3 buttons, and you’ve had two demos from reps who haven’t even broken script to ask you how your day was. You now have logins for 5 different platforms and nobody has shown you how to use any of them. You could choose which one to buy by closing your eyes and throwing a dart.

Post purchase

You’re trying to work out how to use the platform you just bought, support is unresponsive and your sales rep is trying to charge you through the nose for onboarding and implementation services. Your boss is asking to see the impact of your new tool as it is quite expensive, and it will probably be months before you can show her anything - and the whole time, you’re being stung for full price for your new subscription.
