Why isn't my Embed screen working?

Why some embeds don’t work, how to fix them, and what to do instead.

If you’re using the Embed screen in Coassemble to add a third-party tool or website into your course, you might occasionally run into a problem: it just doesn’t work. Don’t worry—you’re not doing anything wrong. Some content simply can’t be embedded due to restrictions placed by the third party.

Here’s a breakdown of why that happens and what you can do about it.

What is the Embed screen?

The Embed screen allows you to display external content (like interactive tools, maps, forms, and more) directly within your course. All you need is an embeddable link.

Why isn’t my embedded tool showing?

If your embed isn’t displaying properly, it’s likely due to one of the following reasons:

The website blocks embedding

Some websites and tools actively block their content from being embedded on other platforms. These are security headers that prevent the site from being loaded in an iframe—which is exactly how the Embed screen works.

The sharing settings on the third-party tool are incorrect

Even if a tool supports embedding, it might not work if it is incorrectly configured or if sharing permissions haven’t been adjusted.

A common example is Google Forms. While Google Forms can be embedded, the form must be shared publicly. If the form is still restricted (e.g., “Restricted to users in your organisation”), it won’t display in your course—even if you’ve used the correct link.

What can I do instead if my Embed screen isn't working?

If embedding doesn’t work, you can still:

  • Link out to the tool with a hyperlink

  • Screenshot the tool or a key part of it and add the image within a screen

  • Record a video walkthrough of the tool and embed that instead.
