How to record a video with Loom without leaving the course builder, in either builder.

Yes. Loom recording is built into Coassemble, so you can capture a walkthrough on the spot while building a course instead of recording elsewhere and uploading. It's handy for intros, demos and anything easier to show than write.

Record a video in the new builder

  1. Add a Video block to your screen, or start the screen from a layout that already has one.
  2. In the Add video dialog, open the Record tab.
  3. Select Record to start a Loom recording.
  4. The first time you record, allow access to your camera and microphone when your browser prompts you. In Chrome, for example, choose Allow.

When you finish, the recording drops into the video block on your screen.

The Add video dialog has four tabs, so recording is one of four ways to fill a video block:

  • Library: a video already in your workspace, searchable by name.
  • Upload: a video file from your device.
  • Paste URL: a link to a video hosted elsewhere, such as YouTube or Vimeo.
  • Record: a new Loom recording.

Record a video in the Classic builder

  1. In your course, select Add screen and choose Video screen. A placeholder video appears.
  2. Select Replace video at the top of the screen.
  3. In the Add video modal, choose Record a video instead of uploading.
  4. Allow camera and microphone access when prompted.

Once you've recorded, the video sits in the Video screen as part of the course.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate Loom account?

No. Recording happens inside the Coassemble editor, so you record without leaving it.

Why am I being asked for camera and microphone access?

Your browser asks for permission the first time you record, so Loom can capture your video and audio. Allow it to record.

Can I upload a video instead of recording?

Yes, in both builders. Recording is one option rather than the only one.

Can I add captions to a video I've recorded?

Yes. Open the Video menu, choose Captions, pick the language your captions are in, and upload an SRT or WebVTT file. Captions aren't generated for you, so the file has to come from you.

Can I reuse a recording in another course?

Yes. Videos you've added are kept in your library, so the Library tab of the Add video dialog is where you find one you've used before.
