Moodle plugin
What the Coassemble plugin for Moodle does, how it connects to your workspace, and what you need to start using it.
What is Coassemble for Moodle?
Coassemble for Moodle is a Moodle Certified Integration that adds Coassemble as an activity in your Moodle courses. Teachers build courses with the Coassemble course builder without leaving Moodle, learners take them inside the Moodle course, and progress, grades and completion come back into Moodle.
The plugin connects your Moodle site to your Coassemble workspace, so every course a teacher builds is saved in Coassemble and linked to its Moodle activity.
What does the plugin add to Moodle?
- Interactive courses, built inside Moodle: teachers build with ready-made blocks for text, media and interactive content, and add quizzes and sections without leaving Moodle.
- AI to get started: teachers can start from scratch or generate a course with AI, then use the builder’s AI agent to rewrite content and add quizzes and narration.
- A player that works on any device: learners get a responsive course player that saves their progress automatically, so they can pick up where they left off.
- Results in the gradebook: progress, scores and completion flow into the Moodle gradebook and activity completion. Coassemble also sends a backup update if a learner closes the page partway through.
- Moodle navigation stays in place: the builder and player keep Moodle’s usual navigation, so teachers and learners always know where they are.
- Reuse across your site: teachers can reuse any course in your Coassemble workspace, either as it is or as a copy, and site administrators choose which builder features are switched on.
How does the plugin connect to Coassemble?
The plugin connects to your Coassemble workspace with an API key. The key is stored on your Moodle server and is never shown in the browser.
Teachers and learners use their Moodle accounts, so they never sign in to Coassemble. When a teacher creates a course, it’s saved in your Coassemble workspace and linked to the Moodle activity.
Teachers manage each activity from Manage content in Moodle. From there they can check the course’s publish status, make a copy, unlink the course, or download it as a SCORM package.
What do I need in Coassemble?
- A Coassemble workspace with a subscription. To talk about pricing for your organisation or your clients, email moodle@coassemble.com.
- An API key from that workspace. In Coassemble, open Developer, then API keys, and click Create key. Give it a name that makes it clear Moodle uses it, for example “Moodle - Main site”, and copy it straight away. Only a masked version is shown afterwards.
The key starts with COASSEMBLE: and identifies your workspace, so there’s nothing else to enter. A key that’s been cut short is the most common reason a connection fails.
Treat the API key like a password. Enter it only in the plugin settings, and create a separate key for each Moodle site so you can revoke one without affecting the others.
What do I need in Moodle?
- Site administrator access to install and set up the plugin.
- Moodle 4.1 to 5.3, with PHP 8.1 or later. On Moodle 4.1, that means PHP 8.1.
- A site served over HTTPS, so Coassemble can send progress updates to Moodle automatically.
- Completion tracking turned on for the site, so teachers can set completion for Coassemble activities.
- Embedded content allowed. The builder and courses open in a frame, so your site’s security settings need to let Coassemble load, and your server needs to reach
api.coassemble.com.
Who can create courses with the plugin?
Anyone with the right Moodle permissions. By default, editing teachers and managers can add Coassemble activities and build courses, and anyone who can open the activity can take the course. You can change this with Moodle roles, using the plugin’s four permissions: mod/coassemble:addinstance, mod/coassemble:author, mod/coassemble:manage and mod/coassemble:view.
Frequently asked questions
Do teachers and learners need Coassemble accounts?
No. Only the person setting up the plugin needs a Coassemble login, to create the API key. Everyone else uses their Moodle account.
What learner data does Coassemble receive?
Learners are identified by a code made from their Moodle user ID and your site, with no name or email address. Teachers’ display names and profile pictures are shared only while they’re working in the builder. Progress is kept in Moodle too, and is covered by Moodle’s privacy tools for export and deletion.
Is the learner experience accessible?
The Coassemble learner experience is designed in line with WCAG 2.2 Level AA, and learners get the same experience inside Moodle. Accessibility of the content itself, such as alt text and colour contrast, stays with the course creator.
